History of online games

By tracing the history of online gaming, it could be seen that it is a combined work of many different entities and companies. Multiplayer games date back to 1972, when a joint project by Control Data Corporation and the University of Illinois called PLATO enabled the network of college students with other terminals for computer-aided learning and education. Sometime in 1978, the Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) spawned a field of network-based games that allow network players to explore and interact with the MUD game world. After which MAD came out in 1984 which was considered to be the world’s first connected game, but MAD only lasted two years. Simultaneously with the use of MUD and MAD in BITNET, Maze War, a game that originated at NASA in 1973, prompted the development of so-called server-host games.

The first graphic MMORPG was Neverwinter Nights. He was integral in the development of MMO games. In the field of shooter games, Doom had the biggest impact with the use of the modem. Additionally, Doom started the standalone service DWANGO, which matched gamers online to support multiplayer games.

Joining Doom was Quake, which focused on client-side prediction, one of the most important aspects of technology. Although their work has been delayed by stock delays appearing on the monitor, Quakeworld refined and improved on these weaknesses. The last and last to develop the online games was Ultima, which made the interaction of the players faster.


Online games, this is also known as Internet games or electronic games. It is a meeting of players with a common game using a local area network (LAN) or even WAN where they could be in the same configuration. Players appear to be in a real situation where they use their mouse or keyboards to move around on the monitor, their virtual world.
