Anthony Hopkins movies are always a pleasure to watch. The legendary actor has spent over five decades perfecting his skills resulting in a distinctive style of acting that is admired the world-over, bringing something different to each and every movie he makes.

The mastery of script is one of Anthony Hopkins main strengths in acting skills – he reads each script exactly 250 times. Hopkins once said “I like to study text. I read it 250 times. I don’t know why, but that’s the magic number. I save the acting for when the director says, Action”. In all Anthony Hopkins movies, this is the method the classically trained actor religiously employs in his solid belief that rehearsals are not necessary and to the annoyance of directors, neither does he tolerate retakes!

Sir Anthony Hopkins has also ventured into directing movies, “August” 1996 having been his first. Hopkins found the movie-making itself “surprisingly easy” by his own words but he came unstuck tutflix when it came to the editing and had to hand this part of the process over to editor Edward Mansell who made ninety minutes of cuts and it was at that point that Hopkins realized his newfound career as a director was ill-conceived and that first and foremost his vocation lay as an actor and his self-directed movies were not successful at the box-office.

As an actor, character studies of great substance excite Anthony Hopkins, excelling at in-depth character research almost fanatically. Hopkins played President Richard Nixon in the movie “Nixon” 1995, at first outraged by director Oliver Stone’s suggestion of himself, a British actor playing an American President. However, Hopkins gradually came round to accepting the role, although he knew it was taking a risk at this time when he was at the peak of his career, following his Oscar-winning performance in 1991 for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of The Lambs”. Anthony Hopkins spent over 50 hours watching video footage of the, by then deceased, President in preparation for the movie “Nixon”, perfecting his mannerisms and accent, capturing the essence of the man, rather than purely his physical appearance. His Oscar nominated performance was powerful, and combined with the superb photography and music score, the movie is a really enjoyable drama from beginning to end, being one of the all-time favourite Anthony Hopkins movies.

Other Anthony Hopkins movies involving the great actor’s special skill at character study include “The Bunker” 1981, where he plays Adolph Hitler, during his downfall and last days before he was defeated. Hopkins’ award-winning performance was so convincing, particularly in the final scenes of Hitler’s ranting hysteria and madness – an early confirmation in Hopkins’ career of his ability to portray madmen and monsters skillfully. In “Surviving Picasso” 1996, where Hopkins portrays the artist Pablo Picasso, playing out the monster in the womanizing, self-centred, manipulating artist, and character study comes into play again – this time he even looks like Picasso, so the performance is even more credible.

In August of 2012, director Peter Jackson, who is currently working on “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” announced that the movie will be released as a trilogy. The announcement came over a year into production, during which time Jackson had asserted that the story would cover just two movies.

Jackson, who also directed “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, made the decision based on the story itself. Without a third movie, he said, a great deal of the adventure would have to be cut out. As a service to the material and to the fans, he has chosen to extend the films.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, “The Hobbit.” It is famous for its complexity; in the process of writing the book, Tolkien developed extensive details of his imaginary world, including several languages. Tolkien scholars marvel over MoviesDa the detail and the histories that the author created. Jackson is no exception; he noted that without going into depth about some of the history of the story, such as the rise of the Necromancer, large parts of the tale would remain untold.

“The Hobbit” follows the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives a quiet life in the Shire. When a wizard and a group of dwarves show up at his door, Bilbo finds himself swept away on an unplanned journey. In the company of his new friends, Bilbo experiences the most beautiful and the most awful things Middle Earth has to offer.

Given the sheer extent of Bilbo’s escapades, it comes as no surprise that Jackson chose to add a third movie. The book is rich with detail and adventure, giving filmmakers more than enough material to work with. In the first few chapters alone, Bilbo and company leave home, encounter man-eating trolls, plunder a treasure stash and find shelter at Rivendell, the legendary home of the elves. Leaving the elves, they run from rock giants, escape a storm, and get caught up by a pack of nasty goblins in the underground chambers of the Misty Mountains.

One of the key moments in “The Hobbit” that is certain to warrant a significant scene in the movie is when Bilbo meets Gollum. The hobbit-turned-evil-creature lurks in the depths of the mountains, carrying the ring and eating goblins. Through a terrifying series of events, Bilbo ends up with the ring, thus changing his fate and the fate of his nephew, Frodo.

At this point in the book, readers have just reached the end of Chapter Five, leaving 14 adventure-filled chapters. After Jackson’s announcement, many fans speculated that the first movie would not reach much farther than the end of the great goblin escape. In fact, much of the commotion and discussion surrounding the trilogy has focused on how the movies will be divided-and, particularly, if the end of the first movie would be changed before its release in December of 2012.

In the ensuing chapters, Bilbo and his companions make friends with giant eagles, meet a man who turns into a bear, escape through a dark wood, get caught by giant spiders, escape the dungeons of the Elvenking and float down the river in barrels to Lake Town. From there, they must still accomplish their initial goal-to rid the Lonely Mountain of the dragon, Smaug. At the conclusion of the book, they fight the Battle of Five Armies.

Many fans and critics have suggested that the second movie in the series will follow Bilbo and the dwarves as they fight Smaug and that the final movie will talk about the Battle of Five Armies. Jackson and his crew, however, have not released specific details about the script for each movie.

Classic films are forever an intriguing part of American life. What qualifies a movie to become a classic is varied as is opinions, but there are some general things that most will agree on. Filming techniques, directing ability and acting all come into play when considering a movie a classic. There is also the most important part of a movie, the audience. The ability of this movie to connect to you on a personal level, tugging at your emotions and touching your soul made it a classic. The ability of a movie to cross the lines of generations and gender also is important. When the movie comes together and you feel as though you are transported to the heart of it and only realize once again when the movie ends that you are in a theater and not the movie, it’s a classic.

The drama of the movie could touch people’s hearts and souls so you left the theater moved for the first time.

Embracing antiwar and political statements, “All Quiet on the Western Front” was a classic film from 1930. With the book already in print the movie followed a German boy who had the displeasure of WWI personally. This movie brought to light the issues at hand of the violence of the war and with many soldiers returning from war crippled, or wounded if at all, it made an impact. Filmed in the back lots and country in California, this movie brought the pain and suffering felt by many American families in the open. The ability of the filmmakers to make a movie focusing on the harsh realities of the time made this movie an instant classic.

In 1937, Disney released the first full length cartoon and captured audiences like never before. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was a technological feat for the time period. People marveled at the fabulous new technology and families enjoyed the movie together. Including human characters and fantasy ones allowed joy to enter the hearts of all who watched. The story intrigued many as a fairytale that had no violence and ended happily ever after.

There have been many movies to enter the realm of classic status since 1930, allowing generation gaps to close and both males and females to be touched emotionally and spiritually. A classic film will never go out of style as people yearn to be moved on the movie screens even today.

A good news release should be one that can be dropped unaltered into a newspaper and be indistinguishable from a news story written by a journalist. In other words, it should be written in the same style as a journalist writes news stories.

You’d be surprised how many people send news releases to journalists in the mistaken believe that the release contains news. In fact, most news releases contain no news at all. Journalists know this. And they do not enjoy having their time wasted. You have to grab their attention immediately.

The first sentence or two of your news release is called the “intro” or “lead”. It is the most important part of a news release and it is where you put whatever is most newsworthy and most attention grabbing in what you have to say. You can’t write a good news release without a good lead, and you can’t write a good lead until you’ve decided what’s important. You have to judge what is most important about what you want to say and it has to be the most significant and most interesting aspect of your subject.

Now that you’ve worked out what your IITSWEB lead is, and this is your first most newsworthy point, you need to follow the release with your second most newsworthy point, and then your third most newsworthy point. Your least newsworthy point is your last sentence. You should write your news release so that if you cut out the last sentence or two, your release will still make sense.

Make sure you write in a “news style” using the sort of short, simple words and sentences journalists would use. Your story must sound like something that might appear in a newspaper, on the radio or on television.

Most news stories include direct quotes from an “authority” involved in the story. News media outlets like to have direct quotes because they help to “humanise” a story, but don’t be surprised if you have to create one. Writing quotes is actually an ideal opportunity for you to incorporate key messages which will help your news release get “picked up” by the news media.

In terms of length, most news releases should be no longer than two A4 pages with double or one and a half line spacing. You don’t have to fill both sides – most times less is more. Just write enough to convince the journalist there is a real news story there.

The following news release writers’ checklist is a useful guide to help you stay on track:-

1.  Only include information in your news release that journalists will regard as news. For example:

• is the story of interest to readers unconnected with my client? and/or
• does it affect the lives of the target media’s audiences? and/or
• does it have a local angle? and most importantly,
• does it read/sound like the sort of news I see in newspapers  and see/hear on the tv and radio?

2.  Make sure that the news release is not only news, but also delivers key messages to your target audience

3.  Write an attention grabbing headline that smacks of newsworthiness.  Make sure you have put the most newsworthy item into the first couple of sentences

4.  Use short, simple words and sentences journalists would use to make it easier for them to pick up on key messages

5.  Write the news release on A4 paper, no longer than two sides with double or one and a half line spacing.

6. Include all contact details and a date the release was distributed , stating whether it is for immediate release or include an embargo date and time.

French movies have over the years, enthralled people all over the world. Beauty and the Beast: This movie is about a man who sets out for his home one night and is captured by a half man and a half beast. The half beast lets the man go on condition that he will send one of his daughters to the beast. The man sends his beautiful daughter to the beast when the girl realizes that the beast has the heart of a human within. The movie is known for its wonderful story and its special effects which were not yet developed in those years.

Belle de Jour: This is a French cinema which is about a lady who loves her doctor husband but is not quite reconciled to the idea of having sex with him. In her quest for sex, she falls into bad company. This movie was released in 1967 and is a wonderful creation.

Birds of a Feather: This movie is about two gay men who run a nightclub in France. One of the men’s sons decides to marry a girl who is the daughter of a Senator. The Senator belongs to the Moral majority party. The two men realize that the Senator might not like the idea of two gay men. This is a wonderful story that is sympathetic to the cause of the gays while at the same time is politically incorrect.

These movies have been able to have a captive audience down the decades mainly because of a superb storyline and skillful acting. This is all the more creditable in the absence of world class technology.

Being born in the 80’s and being a martial arts fan as a kid, I was always going to have a soft spot for this movie. I came across it when I was only small and because the name sounded familiar (Enter the Dragon being my favourite movie at the time). I didn’t know then that this would be one of the only times it was ever shown to my knowledge on UK TV. I have never seen it on tv since, and only just recently re-purchased the DVD.

The movie is about a Kung Fu student named “Bruce” Leeroy Green, who wants to reach the final level, a feat only Bruce Lee achieved. The final level is achieved when you are surronded by a mystical glow, showing you are a true kung fu master. Leeroy’s master tells him to go and search for a Kung Fu master in New Yor kby the name of Som Dum Guy. At the same time he has fallen for Music Video presenter Laura Charles who wants him to be his body guard to help her from Videogame King Eddie Arcadian. An evil Kung Fu master by the name of Sho-Nuff has also returned to town and wants to fight Leeroy, so he can be the kung fu master of Harlem.

The movie was made by Berry Gordy, the founder streameast of Motown Records, so naturally the soundtrack is outstanding. The movie features the best of R&B and hip-hop from the time, sprinkled with martial arts references, including ‘Rythm of the Night’ and ‘7th Heaven’. The soundtracks is one of the best I have heard in a movie and is strong throughout, with a very strong eighties vibe. If you own a soundtrack for a movie, this has to be it. It is particularly awesome when Laura Charles starts playing a song in the 7th Heaven studio and puts on Enter the Dragon, Leeroy gets WAY to exciting, it is slightly worrying at this point. The only one bad point about the music in the movie is Eddie Arcadian’s girlfriend wants to be a popstar and is terrible, but unfortunately we have to suffer through her eye wateringly bad music video.

Sho-Nuff the main bad guy in the movie played by Julius J. Carry III is brilliant. He is one of the best movie bad guys ever, no-one can touch him. He walks about with giant shoulder pads and claims to be ‘The Shogun of Harlem’. He has classic lines such as ‘Kiss my converse’ and is unforgettable. I will be honest he steals the movie from under the nose of Taimak.

Taimak plays ‘Bruce’ Leeroy Green, and it is surprising to know that he had no previous acting experience, and learned on the set as he worked. He does put in a fantastic shift. The fighting scenes are amazing and he is definitely worthy of being called a kung fu master, his acting may be slightly wooden at times, but considering this is his first role ever, he does a brilliant job, and lets be honest his fighting scenes more than make up for it,

I also think Leeroys brother Richie is fantastic, he is hilarious in the movie and a great little actor here. He is played by Leo O’Brien.

The plot of the movie is slightly basic, but it is a good entertaining movie that is easy to follow and heavy on entertainment. It never slows down to much and you learn enough about the characters to at least care about them a little. They are pretty one dimensional and not very complicated but so what, it is a great movie, and the action and music makes up for it.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes martial arts movies and was about in the 1980’s, it is definitely nostalgic and this is probably a big part of why I love it so much. I tihnk everyone should watch this movie at least once.

Being a massive cinephile, I thought it might be, for lack of a better word, “fun” to watch all 12 FRIDAY THE 13th films in a row and give some brief thoughts about them. I’m including FREDDY VS. JASON and the 2009 Remake as part of the series because I’m a glutton for punishment.

Now mind you, I have seen each one of these at least a half dozen times or more, so when watching them this time, I tried my best to approach the movies as if it were my first time seeing them. These are not meant to be heavy critical analysis of the films, they are simply fast and easy impressions to give you a quick review of their merit (or lack of).

FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980)

I wouldn’t call FRIDAY THE 13th a seminal film, but it certainly is one of the most influential in the 80’s slasher genre. The thing that struck me most about this viewing was that the movie holds up better than I typically give it credit. It actually has a discernable plot with naturalistic characters that behave in a sensible manner. They arm and defend themselves and desperately try to survive and I found nothing egregious about how they behaved which lends some credibility to the fairly standard plotting.

Camp Crystal Lake is going to reopen after years of laying dormant due to a number of deaths that have haunted the place over the last decade. Having been dubbed “Camp Blood” by the locals, no one in the town wants to be reminded of the murders that have blighted their once peaceful hamlet.

But ignoring the warning, Steve has enlisted a throng of nubile young teenagers (including a young Kevin Bacon!) to finish it up. One by one the counselors are sliced and diced by a mystery killer in increasingly brutal and gory ways leaving just one to defend herself against the crazed lunatic. All in all, FRIDAY THE 13th is a decent film and worth seeing if you are a fan of horror and appreciate movies that have contributed to the genre over the decades. GRADE: 3.5 (out of 5)

FRIDAY THE 13TH – PART 2 (1981)

I’m a little flummoxed by how to exactly review PART 2. There really isn’t a plot to discuss. For it being 86 minutes long, 6 of those minutes are a recap of footage from the first film via a nightmare that lone survivor Alice is having.

Once she is killed, the rest of the movie is just lambs to the slaughter, this time taking place at a “Camp Blood” adjacent, counselor training facility. All the characters are generic and one by one they get dispatched. This time the killer is Jason, crazed for revenge for the decapitation of his mother.

The few things that PART 2 has going for it is that the characters are still believable as actual human beings and it’s well shot with some honest to goodness visual flair. Steve Miner has a good eye for iconic shots and PART 2 has many of the ones most associated with the series. It’s brisk and doesn’t ask much from the audience but surprisingly the gore is not as graphic as you’d expect with many of the kill moments happening off screen or beyond the frame. GRADE: 3 (out of 5)

FRIDAY THE 13TH – PART 3 3D (1982)

If PART 2 dispensed with the need for a story, PART 3 dispensed with the need for characters. They’ve been reduced to caricatures at this point and any semblance of caring for them has been slashed from the film.

There’s not much to say plotwise. New people come to Crystal Lake. Jason kills them. The only good that came from this movie is that Jason finally gets his iconic hockey mask. Yes, FRIDAY THE 13th newbies, Jason didn’t get his mask until the 3rd movie! Of course how he gets it makes absolutely no sense.

The make-up FX are quite well done here and Jason is menacing as his character continues to take shape over the course of the series. But it seems that the only reason this movie exists is apparently for the 3D gimmick, which is just that, a gimmick. GRADE: 2 (out of 5)

FRIDAY THE 13TH, PART IV: THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984)

With a more polished look and presumably streameast a higher budget, PART IV is erroneously called “The Final Chapter.” Of the early films, I enjoy this one the most for the mere fact that they pull out all the stops as far as gore and… ahem… nudity.

Once again, there’s not much of a plot once the movie gets going. Line ’em up, so Jason can knock ’em down. That about sums it up. At least there was an attempt to humanize the characters; giving a few of them a backstory. Most of the drama centers around your typical teenage angst of “will I or won’t I get laid before the maniac chops me into tiny bits.”

Make-Up F/X gore-master Tom Savini, returns to the series to see the killer off in a blaze of glory. The F/X are particularly bloody in this entry and some of the best of the series. When Jason is finally unmasked, he truly is a vision of horror and his “death” is fitting and equally grisly. A step forward for the fading series and certainly one of the best it has to offer (which isn’t saying much). GRADE: 3.5 (out of 5)

FRIDAY THE 13TH, PART V: A NEW BEGINNING (1985)

The 5th entry in the FRIDAY THE 13th series is just plain dreadful and I don’t mean that in a good way. Jason is dead having been dispatched in PART IV. But Tommy Jarvis is still haunted by the events of that fateful night. People start dying at the group home he’s living at and they are being dispatched by a hockey-masked killer! But Jason is dead?! Has Tommy taken up the mantle?

Whatever cleverness this premise could have had evaporates after the first 15 minutes. Tommy is logically never really a suspect and when the killer is ultimately revealed it is so laughably obvious. On top of that he has absolutely no discernable motive for why he’s killing just about anyone who appears on screen. He kills more random people than those who supposedly deserve it. At least Jason had an agenda.

What’s even more irritating is that most of the violence is off-screen. There are barely any of the make-up FX that are the hallmark of the series and it gets tedious watching the umpteenth person get their throat sliced or just bloodlessly stabbed. For those who like nudity, it seems like there are more naked breasts in this movie than the others combined… and that’s the only reason I’m giving this film half a reel.

There’s nothing better than family movie night when you have the hottest 3D movies to watch. 3D movies are great for people of all ages because there is so much selection now. Families will love the animated 3D movies that kids are enjoying so much these day and adults can sit down to a 3D thriller or action movie that will keep them awake all night long. Whether you are looking for a hot video or a night at the theatre you cannot go wrong with 3D movies.

The opinions of movie fans will vary from person to person as to who is the greatest movie director of all time. There is a lot to be said for James Ford by Western Movie fans. His TV series Band Of Brothers is based on the second world War and is another outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment by the great director.

His movie Schindler’s Ark which was awarded an Oscar is also another great movie with the theme persecution of Jews by the Nazis and their subsequent liberation by Oscar Schindler, a German indusrialist.

His movie Munich based on the retribution by Israelis for the Munich massacre of Israeli athletes by Arab terrorists explores the themes of retribution, forgiveness, compassion for one’s enemies and has been one of his more thoughtful movies.

His movie The Color Purple on the negro experience in America is one of the finest films ever, it is inexplicable as to why it was not awarded an Oscar.

He has also made a contribution to the science fiction movie genre with his movie ET which has also been voted as one of the best children’s movies. However his movie Minority Report is the ultimate science fiction movie and has been hailed as an ancient epic set in science fiction format. His other movies which explore the human condition have also been great contributions to world cinema. His TV series Taken which explores the theme of abduction by Aliens has also won numerous admirers.

Therefore, in view of his voluminous and quality contributions to nearly all types of movies, in my humble opinion, he deserves to be regarded as the greatest movie director.
